I've been using Splenda granular for years now for most of my cooking. While it does a good job of sweetening things, the flavor of brown sugar has been something that sweeteners haven't been able to replicate. While Splenda offers its own "brown sugar blend", it's simply a mixture of regular Splenda and brown sugar - something that anyone can do at home in a few seconds. When I spotted SugarTwin Brown Sugar Substitute - which actually is a 0-calorie sweetener, I thought I'd found a new pantry staple.
I decided the best way to try the sweetener would be in oatmeal - that way, nothing else would compete with the flavor. I poured some into my bowl - it really looks like any other sweetener, except dingy brown in color. I added my cooked oatmeal and stirred up the bowl. I took a bite and my first thought was ... "Oh my GOD, I think I just poisoned myself!"
This is absolutely the worst, foulest, most vile concoction that dares call itself a sweetener on earth! It's not sweet AT ALL; instead tastes bitter, metallic, and chemical-y. I managed two bites of my oatmeal and couldn't finish the rest. Teaches me not to mess with what nature intended! Even when I dumped some of this near an anthill in my yard, the critters blithely ignored it - you know that can't be good.
