I've been on a big jerky kick recently, and I have to admit I am quite intrigued by the soy variations as well. While in a natural food market today, I ran across Stonewall's Jerquee, an all natural jerky substitute. I decided to try the Spicy "Chicken" flavor, and at just $1.69 for a 1.5-ounce snack pack, I figured I couldn't go too wrong.
The company recommends that you eat the snack "right from the bag" or microwave it for 10 seconds "for a hot, sizzlin' snack." I opted for the first option, opening the bag to find round nuggets not unlike large, meaty coins. I popped one into my mouth and was struck with a pizza-like, spicy taste and chewy flavor. I must say, I really liked my jerquee - it was both tasty and satisfying. I loved the spiciness and flavor in a snack that also had a great deal of protein and fiber. The consistency was chewy and somewhat dry, although not as dry as regular beef jerky.
