The bright yellow and orange wrapper of the Odwalla Sweet and Salty Almond Bar drew me in after a long night at the office. We hadn't had time to get dinner, so I had foraged in my bag for bars, and come up with this Odwalla and a tasteless ThinkThin Chunky Peanut Butter Bar.
The appearance of this Odwalla bar was more like a cereal bar, which was quite surprising to me since I'm used to the Odwalla bars being cookie-like. I was slightly disappointed, but bit in regardless. While the initial bite was underwhelming, the flavor grew in my mouth, and I'd say "sweet and salty almond" pretty much sums it up. Almond is a very subtle taste, so if you're looking for a burst of flavor, you won't find it here. However, the variety of crunchy textures (almonds, rice puffs, oats,
syrup) all seem to dissolve at different points in my mouth, which made it an interesting tasting experience.
I loved the dense and naturally sweet nature of the bar, and the "homemade" taste and feel of the bar. Furthermore, there were chunks of smooth walnuts, adding to the homemade feel and the banana flavor was thorough, but not overpowering. Where Odwalla went wrong is with the sprinkling of crisped rice that is dispersed throughout the batter. It is a random addition and tastes like stale crisped rice, obscuring the delicious potential of this bar. If they would leave out this random addition, this bar would completely jive with my taste buds. As a matter of fact, if Banana Bread is what you are going for, pick up a box of Back to Nature Banana Walnut Bakery Squares.
I had never had carrot juice before, and wasn't quite sure what to expect of Odwalla Carrot Juice. However, I love carrots, and some experiments in the kitchen have left me enjoying kale-banana smoothies, so I figured I was ready to venture into the world of vegetable juices.
First, a note about the nutrition. Odwalla Carrot Juice is 100% carrot juice, with the only ingredient being "pure pressed carrots." Fantastic! One bottle contains two 8 ounce servings, each of which has 70 calories, no fat, 1 gram of fiber, 13 grams of sugar, and 2 grams protein. Each serving also provides 520mg potassium (15% RDA), 400% Vitamin A, 4% calcium, and 4% iron. Pretty impressive!
Unfortunately, the taste was less than impressive. In fact, it was kind of gross. I smelled it before drinking, and it had a carrot-y odor - which wasn't surprising or bad - but unfortunately, it smelled like rotten carrots. I figured it couldn't possibly taste as bad as it
smelled, so I tentatively took a sip. Ugh! It was in fact just as bad as it smelled, if not worse. I'm not sure if I just don't like carrot juice in general, or if it was the brand - but this I will not be drinking again.
Odwalla says, "You Flaxy Thang Odwalla Berries GoMega Bar is a great-tasting way to get 1000 mg of essential omega-3 fatty acids from ground flax. Bursting with cranberries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, it's a berry simple snack for that meal-on-the-go." And indeed, when I opened the package, the smell of berries jumped out at me. It was very pungent, but it was a somewhat artificial smell. There was the usual soft cookie-like appearance, which surprised me the first time I had an Odwalla bar (the Odwalla Super Protein Bar), but this time, I was not surprised - in fact, I was looking forward to it.
I took a bite, and my mouth was suddenly bursting with berries. However, unlike the artificial smell, the bite tasted refreshingly natural. Looking more closely at the bar, I saw whole berries mixed in with the grains - yum ! However, a few bites in, I rediscovered that an artificial flavor did began to creep in, just as I had thought - this seems a bit bizarre since this bar is "all natural" ... perhaps one of these types of berries tastes artificial, or maybe there is too much berries (is there such a thing?). This threw me off a bit, but I still liked the flavor and texture of the bar a lot.
If you've read my review of Clif Mojo Bars, you'll know that I love combination of sweet and salty flavors. Give me honey-roasted peanuts or chocolate-covered pretzels any day, and I'll be a happy camper. It was just this taste for sweet and savory that prompted me to buy Odwalla Chewy Nut Bars.
Chewy Nut Bars come in three varieties: Sweet and Salty Almond, Sweet and Salty Peanut, and Trail Mix. All three varieties have a very similar flavor, which is decidedly more sweet than salty. These make a great snack on-the-go--definitely more so than Mojo Bars because they are not as crumbly. One word of advice--I recommend biting into these bars directly rather than breaking off pieces with your fingers. Chewy Nut Bars are sticky, and yes, very chewy.
