Musselman's Healthy Picks Apple Sauce provides a good daily source of fiber and calcium as well as antioxidants from Granny Smith apples (in this case).
While Lizabeth thought the taste of the Musselman's Healthy Picks Key Lime Cupuacu Applesauce was underwhelming, with the Granny Smith apple sauce, the tart flavor is up front and center. It's reduced a bit by some added sugar, which makes it taste a little sweet & tart at the same time. I enjoyed it - but I like tart flavors - and so did our 7 year old taste tester. He couldn't get enough of it ... but then again, he enjoys eating a lime by sucking out the juice, so clearly he is also a fan of tart flavors.
I like to take applesauce cups with me to work as a quick snack for sometime during the workday. These days, a slew of flavored applesauce are available, but many contain lots of added sugar and colors. Musselman's Healthy Picks is a line of healthy-flavored, no-sugar-added applesauce cups, so I picked up a pack of their Key Lime Cupuacu Applesauce at the store.
For those of you who don't know what "cupuacu" is - and I openly admit to looking at Wikipedia as I write this - it's a fruit related to cacao that is rich in antioxidants. It's an interesting if somewhat oddball ingredient, and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect in terms of flavor.
I opened the cup, took a bite, and was thoroughly underwhelmed. This applesauce mostly tastes like ... apples. Shocking, I know! There's a very mild lime flavor, and something floral in the background that I assume is the cupuacu. Maybe they didn't add a lot of either of these because they aren't naturally sweet, and would thus force them to add sugar to the product if they used more. But still, I'd gladly consume a bit of extra sugar if I felt I were being treated to something a little more exotic. As it was, this tasted almost like regular applesauce to me.

Can I get a yum for Musselman's No sugar Added Natural Unsweetened Applesauce?! It's actually been quite a while since I reached for applesauce as a snack, but Musselman's sent me a gift basket with a few of their products to try out, and the Unsweetened Applesauce was the first thing I reached for. First I made Applesauce Chicken - to die for (but I cannot find the recipe online again - help!); Then I tried it as a stand alone snack, and I reconnected with why I used to eat this all the time. The taste is a little tart and it's slightly sweet (there are 8 grams of sugars) per 1/2 cup serving. There is also 2 grams of fiber (8% of the daily value) per serving.
