The Haagen-Dazs Low Fat Chocolate Sorbet was divine, and I knew it was only a matter of time before I tried another variety. On my last grocery shopping expedition, I spied the Haagen-Dazs "Zesty Lemon" Fat Free Sorbet and I threw it in my cart without hesitation. The Haagen-Dazs website says, "Juicy, sun-ripened lemons are selected to create this tart yet sweet fruit sorbet. Häagen-Dazs zesty lemon sorbet is an indulgent treat, with a delicate flavor that will dazzle your tongue and refresh your senses."
I took it home, grabbed a spoon, and dug in. I like that the brand's sorbets are smooth and creamy, not rock-solid, right out of the container. As for the flavor, all I can say is: WOW. This stuff is zesty and lemony and just absolutely delicious. With simple ingredients like Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Fruit Pectin, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid, it's no wonder the lemon really shines through - it's one of the main flavors, other than sugar to make it a bit less tart.
Haagen Dazs sent me a few coupons to try out some of their all natural ice cream products. I let the kids choose and one of the products they selected was the Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Milk Chocolate Almond All Natural Ice Cream Bars. Each substantial 87 gram bar is described as having vanilla ice cream dipped in rich milk chocolate and almonds. Sounds delicious.
This was so tasty. The chocolate coating is like a hard, crunchy shell of chocolate studded with almonds. The vanilla ice cream beneath the chocolate layer is melt in your mouth creamy. And as big as this ice cream bar is, it did not melt till about 3/4 of it was gone. really quite delicious - I can always tell when a product uses full fat milk in their ice cream because it just seems that much richer - but then I get scared to look at the nutrition label.
In this case, each Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Milk Chocolate Almond All Natural Ice Cream Bar provides 300 calories, 34% of the daily value for total fat and 65% of the daily value for saturated fat - gasp
! There is also 19 grams of sugars and 5 grams of protein.
Haagen-Dazs Low Fat Chocolate Sorbet description is that, "every spoonful of this treat delivers a creamy, smooth texture and deep, rich chocolate taste. The cornerstone of this fabulous confection is our premium quality Dutch cocoa, brought to life in a refreshing sorbet." I have to say, I agree wholeheartedly with that endorsement.
The cocoa is dark and rich, the texture is creamy and not icy, and I really felt like I was eating high-fat dessert. Haagen-Dazs Low Fat Chocolate Sorbet is not a heavy cream like the ice cream so I just can't figure out what makes this taste so delicious!
I had previously read the review of the Haagen-Dazs Strawberry Sherbet, so I had a sneaky suspicion that this might be loaded up with sugars. Lucky for me, it seems HD dropped the amount of sugar from years ago. A 1/2 cup serving of Haagen-Dazs Low Fat Chocolate Sorbet provides 130 calories and 20 grams of sugar - compared to the Strawberry flavor which has 28 grams.
It's hard to believe that the Haagen-Dazs brand has anything with anything but a butt load of saturated fat, but the brand's lowfat frozen yogurt offerings seem like they should be "better for you" than ice cream. And indeed, some of them are - many have fewer calories than full-fat ice cream, but not so few as the fat free or sugar free ice cream varieties. Still, I was intrigued to see what the taste was like so I picked up a pint of the Wildberry Lowfat Frozen Yogurt for $4.99 and took it home with me.
I found that this frozen yogurt was soft enough to spoon directly from the container (always a plus), and the taste was remarkable. It was smooth and creamy, milky and sweet, interspersed with a berry flavor. I was amazed at how silky it was and how pleasing and creamy it was to my taste buds.
Each 1/2 cup serving of Haagen-Dazs Wildberry Lowfat Frozen Yogurt provides 180 calories, 2 grams of total fat, 1 gram of which is saturated), 35 mg of cholesterol (12% of the daily value), 40 mg of sodium (2% of the RDA), 27 grams of sugar (no fiber) and 7 grams of protein. Wow - 27 grams of sugars in just a 1/2 cup serving is a LOT!
