Call me a big food nerd, but I actually use gift cards to go on a guilt free trip to Earth Fare (North and South Carolina's version of Whole Foods). I usually buy a bunch of stuff I don't need, but want to try. One of the things that caught my eye on one such recent expedition, was a Farmer's Trail Mix Whole Food Country Square, made by Honest Foods. At $2.99 a square, this is not something I would normally be able to justify! And note that Honest Foods is actually now known as Earnest Eats ... looks like they ran into some "trademark infringement" issues.
This 61 gram square is packed with dried cranberries, raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, almonds and oats. You can really see all the ingredients and it just looks like it will taste good. And ... it does. The square is moist and chewy without being so chewy your jaw hurts when you're done, sweet but not too sweet, and has just the slightest hint of vanilla mixed in with the dried fruits and nuts.
With all these dried fruits and nuts, the fat count is a little on the high side at 9 grams of total fat (15% of the daily value), but only 1 gram is saturated. Each 61 gram Honest Foods Farmer's Trail Mix Whole Food Country Square also provides 240 calories, 17 grams of sugars, 16% of the daily value for fiber and 6 grams of protein.
Honest Foods (now called Earnest Eats) has a name that makes me smile because, in the end, don't we all just wish that foods would be honest to us, feed our bodies with honest nutrition and come from the hands of honest people?! The idea of Granola planks really captivated my interest. Honest Foods says, "With Honest Foods Granola Planks, all that stands between you and a zillion yummy clusters are your own capable fingers. Crumble over yogurt for a delicious breakfast. Pop in your pocket for an on-the-go snack. Toast and top with almond butter. The best part is that since our granola is exposed to less air, the flavors are locked in until you break them up. You'll smell and taste the difference as soon as you open the package." Well, I had me a Honest Foods Maple Almond Crunch Plank and I couldn't wait to try it.
The planks of granola are not crunchy and hard, as you might expect, but are deliciously compact with flavorful, all natural ingredients melding together for a smooth and chewy overall mouth feel. Each bite possesses a nice chew and thorough flavor that brings visions of my mom's holiday maple nut fudge dancing in my head. You will spot chunks of various nuts, plump dried fruit (which is like little pockets of sweet jam when you heat up the bar) and plenty of grains with every bite you take (or crumble you make). The sweetness is just perfectly satisfying and amplifies any product that you combine it with.
Honest Foods Bars (now called Earnest Eats) have always intrigued me with their smooth, dense nature, sleek packaging design and all natural profile. I am a bar girl at heart (as in the portable nourishment typically consisting of oats, dried fruit and/or nuts, type of bar), therefore, Honest Foods roped me in and after one bite of their Almond Trail Mix Bar, and I'm happy to keep them in my nutritious and delicious world.
As I began to enjoy this portable mid-day snack, I immediately detected a very prevalent almond flavor, which tastes as though it's coming from an abundance of almond extract. The bar itself is dense and moist; but, thankfully, not to the point that your fingers get all sticky (my math homework would have paid the price, otherwise). Better yet, you can spot whole almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and walnuts, which I loved. The texture is just perfect and with the second ingredient being almond butter, this is one smooth treat that will keep you satisfied in more ways than one (say "hello" to 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber)! The first ingredient, organic whole oats, provides a substantial chew, complementing the "trail mix" add-ins very nicely.
In addition, each huge 54 gram bar provides 210 calories, 14% of the daily value for total fat, 5% of the DV for saturated fat and 14 grams of sugars. Furthermore, it is vegan-friendly and packed with 190mg of Omega-3's.
