Even though I love the taste and nutrition of real fruit, I still enjoy fruit flavored snacks every once in a while. I've heard of various iterations of fruit leathers that are more natural than the traditional fruit snack, so I was eager to purchase a box of Archer Farms Organic Pomegranate Fruit Strips (Archer Farms is the Target store brand).
The strips were pretty chick and individually wrapped, which was convenient because they had sort of a slick stickiness to them. The flavor was very tart and very sweet, but the fruit strips get their flavor from the juices of organic apples (and its puree too), pomegranates, and a bit of lemon. Even the coloring is natural as it is based on carrot and blueberry juices. The fruit strips are a nice snack, but the sweetness is so strong that the flavor isn't really that authentic to real pomegranate.
Each 0.5 ounce Archer Farms Organic Pomegranate Fruit Strip provides 45 calories and 9 grams are sugars. There isn't much in the way of nutrients.
Peanut butter is a staple in this household because it's creamy, delicious & makes for a darn tasty (and quick) sandwich, not to mention high in protein and healthy fats (as long as you don't use too much). But alas, when you have to scrape off the last little bit from the sides and the bottom, it means it's time to add peanut butter to your shopping list. As I stood in Target staring at the vast array of nut butters, I decided to try the decadent sounding Target brand, Archer Farms All Natural Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread.
I am already a big fan of the chocolate-peanut butter combo; Erin Baker's Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Breakfast Cookie and So Delicious Dairy Free Chocolate Peanut Butter Frozen Dessert are 2 mouth-watering examples. Archer Farms' Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread is nothing different. F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! The taste is comparable to dumping a whole bag of Reeses cups into a blender and blending until smooth and creamy.
Each 2 Tablespoon serving provides 180 calories, 20% of the daily value for total fat and 15% for saturated fats, which is slightly less than a few other natural peanut butters, because some of the peanuts are replaced by the remaining ingredients: sugar, cocoa liquor, molasses and pure vanilla. There is also 6 grams of protein, 10% of the daily value for fiber and7 grams of sugars. The sugar is more than what's in plain peanut butters such as Naturally More and Skippy's All Natural Peanut Butters.
At a recent long distance running race in California, I got to try Hint Pomegranate Tangerine Water and was amazed by how well the "hint" of natural fruit flavoring enhanced the water. The problem was that in my neighborhood outside of California, I could only buy the water by the case or online. While in my local Target store a few weeks later, I saw a collection of similar looking bottles, but it was the Target brand Archer Farms "Touch of Starfruit" Water.
When I unscrewed the cap, the water was fragrant, and it tasted great too. The starfruit essence was definitely present but didn't overwhelm the crispness of the water. It was slightly sweet with just a slight hint of tartness. Even after I drained the bottle of all traces of water, I could still smell the starfruit scent, and I was left with a uniquely designed bottle that I could reuse to store my own filtered tap water before recycling.
I have seen lots of other flavored waters on the market, but many also have artificial flavorings or sweeteners that detract from the "healthiness" of water. The bottle labeling mentions that the water is all natural with 0 calories, no preservatives, and no artificial sweeteners. These claims definitely boost this water above sodas and other sugary drinks.
