Siggi's Icelandic Style Skyr Strained Non Fat YogurtWhen I saw Siggi's Icelandic Style Skyr Strained Non-Fat Yogurt, I really liked the package design - instead of having the label printed on the plastic cup, it was on cardboard wrap around that had a perforated line. The label design was very simple and chic, making me even more eager to taste the yogurt inside. I decided to pony up $1.19 and give it a try.

Skyr is an Icelandic cultured dairy product, similar to strained yogurt (technically it is a very soft cheese). While I had no idea before eating this what "Iceland style Skyr yogurt" was, this reminded me a lot of Greek yogurt. In addition to being decadently thick and creamy, the yogurt had a luscious tart taste that I really liked. Since this was the plain flavor, I enjoyed the texture most of all, and could also see using this as a substitute for sour cream in some recipes.

A 6 ounce serving of Siggi's Plain Yogurt provides 100 calories, no fat, 4 grams of sugar and a whopping 17 grams of protein, as well of 20% of the RDA for calcium.

I found it amazing how low in fat and sugar but high in protein this yogurt is - it makes the perfect healthy snack or breakfast component. The ingredients are simply skim milk, live and active cultures and vegetable rennet.

At $1.19 for the cup, this was a bit pricey, but no more expensive than other Greek yogurts or Organic regular yogurts. I might purchase this again, but probably would wait for it to go on sale and then stock up.
