Private Selection Steam Select Shelled Edamame Review

Private Selection Steam Select Shelled EdamameI like eating bite-sized snacks, but that size often times only comes in processed starchy foods. Edamame, or soybeans, fit the bills the bill quite well, and it's natural and full of nutritious goodness. Edamame are sold either shelled or still in the pods. It's fun eating them out of the pods like you would peanuts, but the shelled product in this review are more convenient to eat.

While you could boil the frozen edamame, Private Selection Steam Select Shelled Edamame was made to be microwave-steamed right in the bag. Although I didn't use the steam method, the design of the bag was comparable to other steamed veggie bags I've seen. The taste of edamame is uniquely mild and at times mildly sweet, and it had a firm but chewy texture. All the soybeans were uniformly large and delicious.

On the bag is sort of a general endorsement by the National Cancer Institute saying that eating fruits and vegetables may lower the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, which is a plus. One serving of Private Selection Steam Select Shelled Edamame is ½ cup which provides 120 calories, 4.5 grams of fat (5% of the recommended daily amount), with a mere 0.5 grams of that being saturated. There is also 12 grams of protein only 8 grams carbohydrates, of which 2 grams are sugars and a whopping 6 grams are dietary fiber, which is 36% of the RDA - wow!

The quality of this product is superb, and I like having the option of steaming the edamame too. Nutritionally, edamame is ultra healthy with all that protein and fiber, and yet it's fun to eat too. While I like eating them right out of the bag, they are also good in salads and with other foods. If you're lucky enough to live near a Trader Joe's or Asian market, though, you can easily find the same amount of edamame selling for less than $2.00 although it may not have the built-in steam bag, but I paid $2.00 for this 1lb bag at Kroger while it was on sale (regular price $2.29). Either way, though, the Private Selection Steam Select Shelled Edamame is a great value, and I would buy the product again.
