Dominex Eggplant Burger Review

Dominex Eggplant BurgerWhen I first saw Dominex Eggplant Burgers in the grocery store, I was skeptical. Sure, I like eggplant, but would this product survive the test of being compared to real burgers and my favorite veggie variety, Boca Burgers? Well, being the adventurous eater that I am, I decided that I would try it.

Dominex says, "We've taken eggplant in an entirely new direction: the American Original Eggplant Burger. We combine fresh eggplant with natural seasonings and ingredients to create a healthy alternative to both conventional and meatless burgers. Our burgers are made from only fresh eggplant and are cooked and packaged just days after being harvested - we never use stored, frozen vegetables. This guarantees you fresh, great taste." That's a pretty strong endorsement, but is it just for show? At $2.99 for a 4-pack, this was considerably less expensive than other veggie burgers, so I decided to give it a try.

I cooked a burger up in the microwave and examined it. My first thought was that it was a little greasy - is eggplant normally greasy? I don't think so, but maybe it;s because of the extra virgin olive oil that I spotted in the ingredients list. I took a bite, and found that the taste of the burger was really pleasant. I loved the spices that were added, and I couldn't even really taste the eggplant. The texture was thick and somewhat chewy, though not too much - real burgers are a bit chewy, after all. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and this made for a great lunch.

Each 78 gram Dominex Eggplant Burger provides 90 calories, 2% of the daily value for total fat, 19% of the DV for sodium, 4 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugars and 9 grams of protein. The ingredients include, Eggplant, Water, Textured Soy Protein (Soy Flour, Caramel Color), Isolated Soy Protein, and less than 2% of the following: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Spices, Natural Grill Flavor (Maltodextrin, Flavor From Vegetable Oil), Dextrose, Torula Yeast, Garlic & Onion Powder, Evaporated Salt, Potassium Chloride, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Modified Food Starch, Methylcellulose, and Caramel Color.

The flavor was spot on, the calories low but the sodium value a tad higher than some other veggie burgers. Not too bad at all - not just eggplant, but you've got to have some spiciness in there as well, and the extra protein kick doesn't hurt - it just goes to show that you shouldn't be afraid to try new things, as you might just discover a new favorite. Put a burger with Pepperidge Farm Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns or Arnold Select Multigrain Sandwich Thins, pile it high with veggies and your favorite condiments, Westbrae or Annie's Mustard perhaps, and you are well on your way to a low calorie, but very filling lunch!
