So far, my expeditions into fat free sour creams has been highly disappointing. Odd sweet flavors, nasty, artificial textures, and overall funkiness mar attempts at fat-free creamy goodness (Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream we're talking about you). When I spotted Naturally Yours in my local Wal-Mart, with its cute, unique cow-print carton, I decided to give this crafty little brand a shot.
The first thing that I noticed when I pealed the top open was the smooth sheen that greeted me. The sour cream was creamy, with no water condensation or graininess. As I stirred, it retained its thick and creamy texture - it didn't wiggle unnaturally like Jello. I scooped some up on a chip, popped it into my mouth and, surprise surprise, it tastes just like regular sour cream! Creamy, tart and with no unusual sweetness nor aftertastes. The texture is as smooth as it looks, and mixed in with some salsa, it made an irresistible dip. I've since had it on baked potatoes, tacos, enchiladas, and even made Ranch dip out of it. I even used this in baking - it works just as well as regular sour cream in coffee cake.
One 2 tablespoon serving of Naturally Yours Fat Free Sour Cream provides 20 calories from 3 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram protein. Of course, there's no fat and 35 mg sodium.
A 16 ounce carton cost $1.40, which was cheaper than Daisy, Breakstone, Knudsen, or Tillamook. The ingredient list is a bit long: "Grade A Pasteurized Cultured Skim Milk, Milk, modified Food Starch, Nonfat Milk Solids, 2% or less of the following: Whey Protein Concentrate, Propylene Glycol Monoester, Artificial Color, Kosher Gelatin, etc" (more info on nutrition facts and ingredients at Walmart.com)">Walmart.com). Still, for the calorie bargain, I say it's worth it. This will definitely be making a repeat appearance in my grocery cart.
