Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream Review

Rating:

Knudsen Fat Free Sour CreamFor me, a baked potato or a bowl of chili aren't complete without sour cream. Of course, as the word cream implies, this is far from a low calorie or fat food, so when I saw Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream for the same price as the regular version, I decided to give this a spin.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the container was the small amount of water at the top. This, especially with dairy, is generally a bad sign. However, I've heard that fat-free sour cream (as well as cottage cheese) occasionally suffers from this problem, so I went ahead and used it anyway. Spooning the sour cream onto my potato revealed a second problem - a definite gelatinized texture which was a bit wiggly, something sour cream just should not be. The writing was on the wall, so now I wasn't surprised at the taste. While it is sour, there is an unnatural sweetness to it and the cream flavor itself is nonexistent. The final blow? It seems as if all of the gelatin didn't dissolve, because there's a bit of graininess detectable.

Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream contains 30 calories, no fat, low sodium (25 mg), 2 grams of protein and only 2 grams of sugar. A tub will run you about $1.20. Is it worth that? Only if you're absolutely desperate for a low-calorie sour cream stand in, and would usually pour sugar or Splenda into your sour cream. Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream tries to be sour cream, but fails on every front.
