San-J Mild Miso Traditional Japanese Soup Review

San-J Mild Miso Traditional Japanese SoupI've been having a lot of soup for lunch recently - perfect for this cold New York weather - but I knew I had to branch out from my go-to Nile Spice Sweet Corn Chowder. Sure, that soup is my absolute favorite, and I could eat it multiple times a day, but how else am I going to make delicious new discoveries if I keep eating the same thing everyday?! I love Japanese food, so I picked up a container of San-J Mild Miso Traditional Japanese Soup for $2.07 from my grocery store. San-J says their soups are, "are packed full of flavor, low in fat and calories and provide the perfect first course or a satisfying healthy lunch-on-the-go."

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 container

Saturated Fat: 0%
Sodium: 1360 mg, 57%
Carbohydrates: 5 grams
Fiber: < 1 gram, 4%
Sugars: 1 gram
Protein: 3 grams

I first looked at the nutrition facts, knowing what a sodium nightmare it was likely to be and I wasn't wrong either. A container provides only 45 calories and 1.5 grams of fat, but 1360 mg sodium (57% of the daily value) shock, less than 1 gram of fiber, and 3 grams of protein. Wow - that's a really high sodium count. Still, I decided to go ahead and try it - I'm careful about my sodium in other respects, so I can afford a bit of a splurge sometimes. The calorie count is super low, so I paired this with a salad and yogurt.

If I could use just one word to describe San-J Mild Miso Traditional Japanese Soup, it would be AWFUL!

I squeezed the individually wrapped miso paste into the container, topped it with the accompanying packet of dried tofu, wakame (seaweed), and green onion, and added hot water. The paste kind of scared me, but I've seen miso paste before, so I guess I should have expected it to look like it did. After letting the soup sit for the allotted minute or two, I dug in.

This. Was. Pretty. Awful. It was horrendously salty (surprise, surprise), and I didn't like the Miso at all. I figured that since there were Dark Miso and Mild Miso flavors, this would be more like restaurant Miso, but I was so wrong. It was dark and thick and just tasted plain ... bad. So much so that I couldn't even finish more than a couple of bites!

San-J, you have let me down, and I won't EVER be buying this one again. If you've ever tried this, please let us know your thoughts in the comments. Let me direct you the the soup reviews here on Iateapie.net where you're sure to find MANY soups with better nutrition facts and taste.
