As a resident of the wonderfully cold Northeastern part of the US, I have come to love anything that is warm and filling this time of year. Therefore, I have done an extensive scan of the soup aisles in my local supermarket. While I have always been a fan of the Healthy Choice dinners, their canned soup line has remained a mystery to me, until now. I chose to try Healthy Choice Roasted Italian Style Chicken Soup as my first attempt.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by this (can you tell I wasn't expecting much?)! The vegetables were nicely flavored, the pasta al dente, and it had plenty of chicken pieces swimming in the broth to satisfy me. The high protein count kept me satisfied until my afternoon snack (3 hours) which is pretty darn good for only 240 calories! (of course I ate the whole can).
Each 1 cup serving of Healthy Choice Roasted Italian Style Chicken Soup (one can has 2 cups) provides 120 calories, 5% of the daily value for saturated fat (4% for total fat), 18% of the daily value for sodium, 4 grams of fiber and a whopping 9 grams of protein.
I purchased this soup on sale at Wegmans for 10/10 ($1.00 each), but it regularly retails for $1.79. I don't know why I didn't expect much from Healthy Choice Soups - probably because there is more advertising for Campbell's and Progresso Soups - but I would definitely buy this variety again. It has a little less sodium than most "low sodium soups" and more protein too. I will probably try a few more other varieties too, although I see that Healthy Choice Split Pea and Ham and Chicken Noodle, Minestrone and Healthy Choice Bean and Ham Soup have already been reviewed.
