Contrary to popular belief, tuna salad is not always the healthiest sandwich filling because of all the mayonnaise that's used. I love me some tuna salad though - usually homemade with a reduced fat mayo like Kraft Reduced Fat Mayo with Olive Oil. Instead of making my own, I decided to try the Bumble Bee Fat Free Tuna Salad with Crackers kit. The compact size made it perfect for a snack or as a small part of a lunch.
The package includes a can of fat free tuna salad, a bag of crackers, and a little plastic spoon. The tuna salad was a lot sweeter than I had expected, but it was still tasty - as if it were homemade. It's actually seasoned as a look at the ingredients list reveals water chestnuts and carrots. The crackers were appropriate for holding the tuna salad with a saltiness to balance the sweet tuna salad. While I liked the convenience (especially with the built in scooping spoon), the crackers weren't whole grain and contained partially hydrogenated oils, so this I could have done without. How do you eat your tuna salad? Sometimes I enjoy it with crackers, sometimes I like it on it's own and sometimes I eat it with a slice of whole wheat bread.
The 2.9 ounce can of tuna provides 70 calories while the 6 crackers provides 80 calories. The tuna has no fat, 19% of the daily value for sodium (450 mg), 7 grams of protein and 10 grams of carbohydrates which includes 5 grams of sugars.
The crackers have 1.5 grams of fat, including 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 13% of the DV for sodium (310 mg), 2 grams of protein and 14 grams of carbohydrates, including 1 gram of fiber and grams of sugars.
The 3.5 ounce Bumble Bee Fat Free Tuna Salad with Crackers cost $1.16 at Walmart. This kit is really convenient, and the tuna packs a lot of protein in its punch, but watch out for the sodium (and Bumble Bee - you could revamp some of the ingredients a little - get rid of the artificial food colors in the tuna). I could see myself buying this on occasion instead of having something fast food-ish - or even as a more filling snack instead of a sugary sweet nutrition bar - after all, there are only 150 calories total in this.
