These days, it's easier than ever to make delicious pizza at home ... from a store bought pizza - although I know lots of people who make fantastic pizza from scratch, I'm not so inclined. The problem is that with so many options on the supermarket shelves, only trial and error will clue you in on which brands taste the best. That and a good review from Iateapie.net of course!
I spotted Earth's Best Whole Grain Cheese Pizza from what seems like a mile away, because it seemed like the bright red Elmo was screaming, "Buy Me" from inside the frozen food case. Well Elmo, it looks like this pizza is geared towards kids, but since they are more picky eaters than adults, I'm sure I will probably enjoy it too - so into my shopping cart went a box of this pizza.
When I got home, I made a quick scan of the packaging while I was waiting for this pizza to heat up. Earth's Best Whole Grain Cheese Pizzas are all natural, 70% organic, made with organic ingredients growth without pesticides, made without hydrogenated oils and contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The plethora of added B vitamins is supposed to increase energy, and the iron and zinc boost oxygen transport and immunity.
Well, sounds good to me, and lucky for me - this pizza tastes pretty good. The crust is a little more doughy than crispy, but I didn't mind. There's nothing different about it from other pizzas I have had that aren't made with whole grains, and other than the fact that I would add a few toppings to mine to make it more substantial (like with strips of Bell Peppers and Lightlife Smart Deli Pepperoni), I thoroughly enjoyed this.
A box of Earth's Best Whole Grain Cheese Pizza cost $3.99 and has two individual pizzas. Each pizza is 87 grams, not huge but enough to be a satisfying part of a meal, and provide 190 calories from 6 grams of total fat, of which 3 grams is saturated fat (10% and 15% of the daily value). There is also 380 mg of sodium, 4 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein, and 25% of quite a few vitamins and minerals (the ingredients list, which can be found at EarthsBest.com, is pretty short: Organic Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Salt, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Yeast, Vitamins & Minerals. Sauce: Organic Tomatoes, Water, Organic Garlic, Organic Canola Oil, Salt, Organic Basil, Organic Oregano, Organic Rosemary, Citric Acid. Topping: Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheeses (Part Skim Milk, Pasteurized Milk, Bacterial Culture, Salt, Calcium Chloride, Microbial Enzyme, Annatto [For Color]).
Overall, I highly recommend this - and it's a bargain too. Try it and let us know what you think.
