Please check out the Waffle (and Pancakes) Reviews if you are still buying Eggos! This is one area where "natural" and some "organic" products excel in nutrition facts and taste, and the price, while more, is not prohibitive. Still, I am no "brand name snob" and when I saw the more ... mainstream Aunt Jemima Low Fat Waffles in the store, I couldn't resist buying it to review, especially since the kids approved this purchase - there have been a few mishaps in the household with the kids and some "natural" waffles that weren't very tasty and so now they threaten to organize a hunger strike if they see a brand name they don't recognize!
I found the Aunt Jemima Low Fat Waffles were a little bland on their own, but there were no "off" tastes, and it just allowed the additions to shine through - after all, who eats waffles plain?! For some reason, I expected this to have a lot of sugars, so I was pleasantly surprised to see only 2 grams of sugars per serving of 2 pancakes. This means when the kids attempt to kill it with syrup - at least the pancaked won't add to the sugar grams.
Each serving of 2 Aunt Jemima Low Fat Waffles provides 160 calories from 2.5 grams of fat (4% of the daily value), 0.5 grams of which is saturated, 420 mg sodium (18% of the DV), 1 gram of fiber (4% of the DV), 2 grams of sugars and 4 grams of protein.
I was curious about this "low fat" label on these Aunt Jemima Waffles. Eggos has about 8 grams of total fat, but other Auntie J pancakes only have about 4.5-5 grams of fat which is 7-8% of the daily value, about the same amount of calories and less sodium, but more sugar. Kashi GoLean Waffles (Original) has 8 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and only 3 grams of fat per serving; Nature's Path Organic Optimum Power Waffles has a little more fat at 4 grams, but 5 grams of fiber and protein - both have more fiber and protein than Aunt Jemima Low Fat Waffles, but a little more sugar at 4 grams.
A box with 10 cost $1.99, which is a reasonable price, and I would buy these waffles again, but surprisingly, not because of the low fat, but because of the lower sugar content, and the lower price. Still, if I wanted to up the amount of protein and fiber in my diet, I would look at the other 2 waffles mentioned. What do you like to put on your waffles? I always add syrup (Cary's Sugar Free Maple Syrup) and bananas.
