I do love my protein bars, as well as searching for a new one to call my favorite. I'm picky though - I don't like those that taste like candy bars, and tend to prefer textures like Odwalla and Luna. While shopping one day, I was caught off guard by the bright yellow striped packaging and bold red lettering of Doctor's CarbRite Diet Banana Nut with Soy Nuts Sugar Free Bar. My curiosity was peaked. I figured that with the protein factor, plus soy nuts, which I love, it can't hurt to give it a try. Try I did, and was pleasantly surprised.
Upon opening the package, I saw a good-sized bar that, yes, resembled a candy bar with its thin chocolate coating. The chocolate flavor is not overbearing, which to me is good because I don't like chocolate very much (with some exceptions). It is not a bar with grainy texture, nor is it crunchy - more soft and smooth. It has a pleasant banana taste, slightly artificial but not overly sweet. Hints of soy nuts are present, probably crushed and mixed into the bar somewhere, as there were definitely no full or even half soy nuts anywhere in that package. I didn't notice any unpleasant aftertaste, nor did I experience any ... let's say, problems from the other end, as I have with some bars (surprising given the large amount of sugar alcohols in this bar).
In the generous (and pretty filling) 57 gram bar, there are 190 calories, 4 grams of total fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates - 20 grams of which are sugar alcohols (yikes!), and a whopping 21 grams of protein. It also contains 15% of the daily value for calcium and 5% for iron and is Glutenfree. The nutrition facts vary by flavor, but only slightly (190-200 calories, 3-5 grams of fat, 20-21 grams of protein).
The price can get in the way. I first got it at Wegmans for $1.39, but as there is no Wegman's nearby, I have to order them online or grab them at GNC or certain grocery stores, which costs anywhere between $1.69 up to over $2.50 per bar.
I can see this bar being an acquired taste (I admittedly have strange taste in food at times), but I actually enjoy this bar, and like it even better when it's chilled first. I keep some in the fridge for when I need a really quick protein boost. Doctor's CarbRite Diet Sugar Free Bar comes in an extremely wide variety of flavors including Toasted Coconut, S'mores, Raspberry Chocolate Truffle, Lemon Meringue, Frosted Cinnamon Bun, Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Mint Cookie, Chocolate Brownie, and Blueberry Cheesecake. These all sound more like decadent desserts rather than a protein bar found in the health food aisle - of course, that seems to be the deal with many health foods these days. It makes them appeal more to the masses, who want to have their cake and eat it too.
