Let's start off with the point that if something gives me an excuse to have chocolate for breakfast or as a "healthier snack", I am all over that. Therefore, I did not have a choice when I found VitaMuffin Deep Chocolate VitaTops in the freezer section of a local grocery store (on sale, nonetheless).
After a round and half in the toaster on med-low, I popped my VitaTop in the microwave for 10 seconds (I am impatient when it comes to chocolate). It came out warm, calling my name. The taste is wonderful. It's just chocolaty enough and not overly sugary. Each 2 ounce VitaTop seems to have a cake-like texture when it first hits your mouth and after a chew or two, it begins to have the creamy, dense texture that a muffin top should. The Top that I sampled did not have as many chocolate chips as the picture on the box conveys (there was about 5 total - 3 on the top and maybe 2 inside). When I did hit a chocolate chip, it really upped the ante and added a creamy boost of richness. If only there had been a few more ...
The nutritional facts of VitaMuffin Deep Chocolate VitaTops is thankfully not as bad as you would imagine when you hear the words "Deep Chocolate." Each 55 gram Top provides 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat (2% of the RDA), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (4% of the RDA), 230 mg of sodium (10% of the RDA), 6 grams of fiber (26% of the RDA - whoa!), 10 grams of sugar, 2 grams of sugar alcohol and 4 grams of protein. Now for the "Vita" part of VitaTops. Each chocolate creation packs in 4 - 50% of the RDA for 15 vitamins and minerals. Hello!
By the way, the nutritional panel online is slightly different from what's on the box. It displays 0.5 grams more saturated fat and a bit less sugar and protein. I still can't wrap my head around having chocolate for breakfast, but this protein, fiber and vitamin packed treat is certainly a worthy, satisfying, sweet snack. On the other hand, they are not very cheap. I paid $3.99 for a pack with 4 VitaMuffin Deep Chocolate VitaTops on sale. They can also be purchased online at the Vitalicious website. Vitalicious products have yet to let me down, so they are worth the money.
Although I wish they would have included a few more of the melty chocolate chips like the picture on the box, I was generally quite satisfied with this purchase. If chocolate is not your thing, check out our review of the AppleBerry Bran VitaTops - yum!
