Dentyne Blast ChocoMint Sugar Free Gum is the first chewing gum I have seen that attempts the ambitious combination of both chocolate and mint - and in a sugar-free gum. I was skeptical that this would have a positive outcome, yet I was hoping for the best because I know lots of chocolate fiends who would buy this in bulk if it turned out well. So, despite my personal objection to spending more money on a 9-pack of this compared to a 12-pack of Dentyne Ice, I went ahead and got it so I could do a review for the good of all chocolate fiends out there!
I first broke it apart do I could report on the appearance at Food-Notes.com - it was not gushing chocolate from the middle as seen on the package. Next, I threw it in my mouth and smiled in surprise as I chewed away and experience a nicely balanced chocolate flavor that was not too overpowering for a gum base. Mint also showed a strong presence, but it was all about the chocolate for the first 5-10 minutes. Gradually, the chocolate flavor diminished to almost nothing and the mint taste got stronger. I was quite pleased with the flavor combination, and the gum was quite long lasting. Hopefully we will start seeing more exotic flavored gums on the market.
The calorie count for Dentyne Blast ChocoMint Sugar Free Gum says "less than 5" and elsewhere on the package - where they felt the need to inform us that his is 40% fewer calories than sugared gum - they mention that it is 3.5 calories. The ingredients list, as you can imagine, is filled with some items that many may not understand, plus there are 3 different artificial sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame K and sucralose) in addition to erythritol (a sugar alcohol and source of some calories).
I paid $1.58 for a pack containing 9 pieces, and as I mentioned previously, another brand of Dentyne gum is $0.99 for 12 pieces. Is it worth the extra money? Only you can decide (my pocket can't handle any extra expenses the way the economy is going), but this should be a hit with the gum chewing public.
