Meyenberg Goat Milk Review
Goat milk is supposed to be more easily digested than cows milk, which is important if you are lactose intolerant like I am. After passing by goat milk countless times in favor of soy milk and rice milk, I finally decided to try it.
Meyenberg Goat Milk has the same consistency as regular cows milk and tastes a lot like it, except you get a faint hint of a flavor that is not in regular milk. It is difficult to describe, but it is very subtle and not at all unpleasant. If you have ever had goat meat before (and I strongly suggest you try curried goat which is exquisite), you might recognize this flavor as characteristic of the 'goat' taste. I could drink this milk straight, without adding it to anything, or, with cereal which I also did. Goat's milk is usually "ultra pasteurized" which means it has a very long shelf life. As far as being more easily digested - lets just say that I noticed a bit of flatulence and it did not smell very nice (it was stink! but I am trying not to be too graphic about my bodily functions). Just that side effect alone is enough to make me swear off this stuff.

Meyenberg Goat Milk is a bit more expensive than cows milk. I purchased it for $3.12 at Busch's Grocery Store in Michigan - although it may be cheaper at other supermarkets because the prices at Busch's tend to be a bit high. One cup has 140 calories, 7 grams of total fat which is 11% of the recommended daily amount, 4 grams of total fat which is 20% of the RDA, 8 grams of protein and 11 grams of total carbohydrates (all sugar). The nutritional information for goat's milk is very similar to that of whole (full fat) cows milk. Meyenberg also has a reduced fat version of the goats milk.
If it helps with your lactose intolerance, then it is probably worth buying it, but I had side effects in the form of flatulence which has a very offensive odor, so I think I will be staying away from this one - unless I need to use it in a recipe. Has anybody else tried goats milk? I would love to hear your opinion, so please leave us a comment.
Also, I read this on the Meyenberg website and I thought I would share - in case anybody else loves cheese as much as I do: Meyerberg Smoked Jack Goat Cheese and European Style Goat Milk Butter won 1st Place Awards in their respective categories at the American Cheese Society Competition, July 22, 2006. Where can I get a sample of that?!
