For years, I have shunned pepperoni as a greasy, caloric, fat bomb. I order my pizza with veggies, pick around it on cheese trays, and in general, turn my nose up at it. However, anything with the word "turkey" in it usually sparks my interest and, given the fact that I can't even remember what pepperoni tastes like, I decided to give Margherita Turkey Pepperoni a fair shot.
Yum
!!! This pepperoni had all of the meaty, spicy goodness I used to associate with the full fat flavor, and none of the greasiness. If I hadn't known it was made of turkey, I never would have guessed it. Use this on pizza, in a wrap or a pita pocket, or even as a solo snack - you won't be disappointed.
Each 14-piece serving contains 50 calories, 2 grams of fat, 8 grams of protein, and 1 gram of carbhydrates. The sodium is a high though at 18% of the daily value per serving.
Margherita Turkey Pepperoni retails at Tops for $3.69 per package, but I managed to get it when it was on sale for $2.00. Slightly pricey for the retail cost, but consider the alternative. A serving of Hormel Pepperoni (same 14 slices) is 140 calories and 30% of the daily value for saturated fat - and actually less protein (5 grams - source).
Margherita Turkey Pepperoni is definitely worth it - more home made pizzas anyone? Especially, since you can further reduce calories and fat by using Weight Watchers Reduced Fat Shredded Mozzarella Cheese.
