There are days when I enjoy cooking a full blown breakfast complete with toast, scrambled eggs and sausage. I was in one of those moods when I spotted Banquet Brown 'N Serve Turkey Sausage Links with a very reasonable price tag of $0.79 per box of 10. Do you know the old saying, you get what you pay for?! Well, this product is the embodiment of that term.
The first thing that I noticed when I opened the box was the diminutive size of the links. Each link is only about 2 inches long. I decided to brown the sausage in a skillet rather than microwave it, and I must say, it did brown pretty well. Unfortunately, the taste and the texture left much to be desired. It appears as if the good folks at Banquet/ Con Agra simply formed their bulk sausage into links, rather than stuff it in a proper casing. This made the texture is downright mealy. I was also expecting more spice - no taste of pepper, sage, fennel or anything else except salt, which is there in abundance. I also noticed that I could actually press grease out of these which surprised me, as poultry sausages are usually quite lean.
One serving of Banquet Brown n Serve Turkey Sausage is 3 links with 110 calories, 7 grams of fat, 2 grams of which is saturated (both are 10% of the recommended daily amount), 13% of the daily limit for cholesterol, 390 milligrams of sodium (16% of the RDA), and 9 grams of protein and 2 grams of total carbohydrates. Each serving is also 3 Weight Watchers Points.
This was supposed to be a Saturday morning indulgence, and the price was right at less than $1.00 per box as previously mentioned (each box has 10 sausage links), but the quality is certainly not worth it. Then again, I guess I got what I paid for.
