For me, organic food often equates with being overpriced and not necessarily healthier than regular food. I found a small selection of reasonably-priced frozen burritos from the organic Amy's brand among some non-organic frozen food and picked up an Amy's Organic Beans & Rice Burrito to try. Prior to this purchase, I had heard a few good things about the Amy's brand but had never had any of their products. Fortunately, this turned out to be a positive eating experience.
The microwaving directions said to wrap the frozen burrito loosely in a paper towel before microwaving and also to turn the burrito upside down midway through the heating process. I ended up microwaving the burrito wrapped in a paper towel for the full recommended time but without the additional turning, and the burrito came out just fine with only a little bit of spilling from the ends. The tortilla, made from organic whole wheat and wheat flour, was soft where it directly touched the bean and rice filling and a bit more crisp where it was an additional covering (i.e. leftover tortilla from wrapping the burrito). The burrito itself was not spicy hot, but the beans and rice did had a nice Mexican flavor to them. According to the ingredient list, there are also a few vegetables (tomatoes, onions, bell peppers) in the burrito, but I didn't really get a visual or notice the taste of them as I was eating. Overall, I thought it was filling and a reasonable frozen option for lunch.
One Amy's Organic Beans & Rice Burrito weighs in at 6 ounces and has 280 calories, 6 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of which are saturated, and no cholesterol. There are 550 milligrams of sodium (23% of the RDA), 48 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of which are dietary fiber (22% DV) and 2 grams of which are sugars, plus 9 grams of protein.
Talk about a nutrition double whammy with the protein and fiber! Whether or not you place a value on the "organic" label of foods, this is a deal at $1.69, which is how much it cost me at Target. The burrito is non-dairy and also appropriate for a vegan diet.
