Healthy Choice Pumpkin Squash Ravioli Review
I have never been a huge fan of Healthy Choice meals, but after their recent makeover and introduction of new meal options, I figured that it was time to give them another shot. Therefore, I picked up a box of Healthy Choice Pumpkin Squash Ravioli (which is a vegetarian meal by the way), and headed home with an open mind.
The first thing that caught my eye, after spending 6 minutes by my microwave, I cannot say I was thrilled with the appearance. There was something that looked like oil suspended within the watery substance. I had mixed feelings about the taste. The Healthy Choice Pumpkin Ravioli is described as having, "Ravioli stuffed with tender pumpkin and combined with crisp asparagus, sweet butternut squash, and juicy Granny Smith apples, topped with a butter-sage sauce." I thought the pumpkin filling was delightful - each mouthful is rich and flavorful - but, the rest of the meal was mediocre.
The sauce was sub-par and lacking in flavor. As far as vegetables go, the plentiful asparagus was a welcomed addition; but the butternut squash chunks, while flavorful, were way too mushy. Furthermore, I found about 3 random cubes of apples (despite being listed as the fifth ingredient, they fail to make the "front-of-the-box" description). It is almost as though the apples accidentally fell into the tray on their way to the dessert section of the Healthy Choice's Fire Roasted Tomato Chicken entree.

The Healthy Choice Pumpkin Squash Ravioli ingredient list is very impressive for a frozen meal. You can read the short, all natural ingredient list and understand every component listed, while appreciating the absence of preservatives. Each 9.2 ounce tray of food provides 300 calories, 6 grams of total fat which includes 2.5 grams of saturated fat (9% & 13% of the daily value), 600mg of sodium (25% of the DV), 9 grams of protein and 52 grams of carbohydrates which includes 6 grams of fiber (24% of the RDA) and 4 grams of sugar. There is also 60% of the daily recommendations for vitamin A - go pumpkin!
I think this dish has the potential for radiating success with some slight modifications. And while it was okay - it has a long way to go before it's as good as Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash Ravioli. Still, there were other reviewers who loved this, like YumYucky and Freezer Burns, so let's hear your opinion. Have you tried it - what did you think?
