When I read Jessica's review of Lightlife Smart Deli Pepperoni, I couldn't wait to try it. I love pepperoni - on pizza, in sandwiches, as well as by itself. Since I could easily see myself eating an entire package, the fact that would only be eating 200 calories worth of protein-packed goodness was highly appealing. When I went to the grocery store to look for the product though, I couldn't find it! What I did find, however, was Yves Meatless Pepperoni. At $2.49, the price was comparable to Jessica's find.
As for the taste, I found that like Lightlife Smart Deli Pepperoni, it wasn't exactly like pepperoni; it lacked a certain something unique to real meat, something I couldn't put my finger on. The spices were really good, but the texture was very "imitation meat." It also left a strange aftertaste in my mouth, something that I wasn't too happy about.
An entire box of Yves Meatless Pepperoni (2.5 servings) provides only 200 calories, which is pretty great, especially since it also provides 35 grams of protein. The sodium count, however, is pretty high - a whole box would give you 40% of the daily value! Each 16-slice serving provides 80 calories, 1 gram of fat (no saturated fat), 390 mg sodium (16% of the DV), 150 mg potassium (4% of the DV), 14 grams of fiber, and some vitamins and minerals, including 20% of the RDA for each iron, thiamin, vitamin B12, and zinc.
I wanted to love Yves Meatless Pepperoni because of the savings in calories from regular pepperoni. Applegate Farms Sliced Pepperoni for example, provides 120 calories and 20% of the daily value for saturated fat. But, I'm unlikely to buy Yves again because the taste just wasn't everything I could have hoped for. Like Andrea said in her review at Off Her Cork, "while it smelled like pepperoni and was slippery like pepperoni, it did not taste nor have the texture of pepperoni."
