Starbucks is notorious for their ridiculously high calorie snacks and baked goods that beckon you from a glass case while you innocently order your Tall Skinny Latte. I'm usually pretty good at fending off those temptations, but recently I decided to give in when I glanced over and found the words "reduced-fat" not once, but twice in the name of one of their creations. The Reduced-Fat Turkey Bacon, Cholesterol-Free Egg, Reduced-Fat White Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich is as almost as much of a mouthful to say as the majority of Starbucks' drinks!
When I first unwrapped it, I was a little disappointed with its appearance. It didn't really look like what I remembered seeing in the glass case. In fact, it was much more egg-dominated than the name suggests. It is served warm ("oven-toasted") on a multigrain English muffin but ven after taking a few bites, the bacon was hard to find. The cheese, however, was gooey and had a strong flavor, which is uncommon in a reduced-fat cheese. While I'm not a huge fan of egg, I actually enjoyed the cheese/egg combo, possibly because the hearty English muffin balanced out the eggy flavor. Although there wasn't nearly enough turkey bacon, I enjoyed this sandwich and it filled me up for longer than my usual cereal and soymilk breakfast preference.
After I got home, I was a little scared to check the nutritional information on the Starbucks website. Since I was prepared for the worst, I wasn't shocked when I found out that this sandwich has 350 calories, 11 grams of total fat (17% of the RDA), 4 grams of saturated fat (20% of the RDA) ,32% of the RDA for sodium (810 mg), 20 grams of protein and 41 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 3 grams of fiber (12% of the RDA). That's 50 more calories and 11 grams more carbohydrates than a McDonalds Egg McMuffin. Yes, the Starbucks version may taste better, but this isn't the kind of breakfast you want to make a habit out of.
I got this sandwich for $2.95, which actually isn't that bad for Starbucks, but they better rethink this sandwich a little to improve the nutrition facts because Dunkin Donuts Egg White Flatbread Sandwich has much better nutrition facts - with 280 calories, 6 grams of total fat and 2.5 grams of saturated fat, but it's also high in sodium as well.
