Chips and salsa is a guilty pleasure of mine. I tell myself that all of that spicy salsa is full of vitamins, lycopene, and all other sorts of goodness, but I can't fool myself into pretending that my deep-fried chips are a healthy treat. Luckily, my local store recently had a sale on Guiltless Gourmet Chips, which are all natural baked chips, so I felt more comfortable feeding my chips and salsa addiction with these. I decided that the plain unsalted corn chips would be the best compliment to my salsa, so I opted to try them first.
The chips, being baked, are harder and denser than a fried chip but still pleasantly crisp. The problem is, they are also thinner than normal. While this keeps the chips from becoming brick-like during baking, it means they're so fragile that half of the bag was full of broken chips. Speaking of half of the bag, despite how tall these bags look, they're less than half-full when you open them. Talk about deceptive! The taste was great - the corn flavor is strong, and even has a mild sweetness. I think that I'd buy the salted variety next time, however, as the unsalted felt like they were missing something.
One serving of Guiltless Gourmet Unsalted Baked Corn Chips (about 17 chips) provides 110 calories, 1 gram of total fat, no sodium, 2 grams of protein, and 23 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 8% of teh RDA for fiber (2 grams) and 1 gram of sugar.
A 7 ounce bag at normal price is around $2.50, which I actually find to be pretty steep since you receive a ton of fragments. I would however buy these again on sale.
