Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery Fromage Blanc 0% Review

Rating:

Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery Fromage BlancAs a card-carrying yogurt lover, I like to think I know my way around the yogurt selection in most grocery stores. I don't eat much cheese because of dairy issues, though, so I am woefully ignorant about the cheese of the world. What I recently discovered was that, somewhere in the middle, there exists an amazing product known as fromage blanc (or fromage frais). Fromage frais is a creamy soft cheese made with whole or skimmed milk and cream. Pure fromage frais is virtually fat free. Fromage frais can be served either as a dessert similar to yoghurt, frequently with added fruit, or used in savory dishes. I spotted an 8 ounce container of VVermont Butter & Cheese Creamery Fromage Blanc 0% on sale for $2.99 at the grocery store, so this went into my cart immediately.

Let's look at some info from the company first. The 0% Fromage Blanc is described as made from fresh, rBGH-free Vermont milk with a fresh milk flavor, pleasantly tart, smooth, spreadable texture. Serving suggestions included sweetening with sugar, maple syrup, or honey, blended with preserves and used to top a bagel, or mixed with herbs and served on potatoes or as a spread. I opted for the first option, as that is how I eat my Greek yogurt. Let me tell you, this stuff is great - insanely rich and creamy. It's thick, too, and not as whipped as Fage. It feels truly indulgent while still being good for you - the nutrition facts are unbelievable.

A serving of Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery Fromage Blanc 0% is 1 ounce, which provides 15 calories, no fat, 50 mg of sodium, 1 gram of sugar, 2.5 grams of protein, and 5% of the RDA for calcium. Of course, each tub is 8 ounces - so that's 120 calories, no fat, 8 grams of sugars and 20 grams of protein - still pretty good as 2/3 the calories are from protein!

The ingredients are SO simple, too: pasteurized skim milk, culture, enzymes, and salt. This has got to be my most exciting new find this year! 2 thunbs up thumbs up
