Oh to be a kid again ... sugary, artificial cereals always remind me of the old days, before my nutritional knowledge evolved. Another aspect that evokes good old childhood memories is cartoon characters. Therefore, when I saw My Friends Tigger and Pooh Corn Puffs Cereal on sale for $1.50 - and it actually had a respectable nutrition label - I decided to take a trip back in time! It's also worth mentioning that this cereal is gluten-free.
Upon opening the colorful box, I was immediately surprised. The cereal is orange ... like a shade of Cheetos, which was a little shocking to me as I wasn't expecting that color in a cereal. The crispy little balls are about the size and texture of Coco Puffs. Actually they remind me of a slightly sweeter version of Kix Cereal or a softer version of Cap 'n Crunch. And when they say "lightly sweetened" they mean it. Overall, they make for a great crunchy, sweet snack that won't blow your day. They would be perfect for kids too, of course.
Each 1 cup serving of My Friends Tigger and Pooh Corn Puffs Cereal provides 120 calories, 1 gram of total fat (2% of the recommended daily amount), no saturated fat or cholesterol, 180 mg of sodium (7% of the RDA), 1 gram of fiber (4% of the RDA), 8 grams of sugar and 1 gram of protein. Each serving is fortified with a whole host of vitamins and minerals, which is appreciated. Furthermore, the ingredient list has only 10 ingredients, from whole grain corn to various forms of sugar, salt and oil.
You can certainly do better, but I have to give General Mills two thumbs up for the most part. For a gluten-free breakfast, occasional snack, substitution for partially hydrogenated 100 calorie packs or mental-trip to the old times (this time with much better nutrition), My Friends Tigger and Pooh Corn Puffs is the way to go!
