Kashi Honey Sunshine Cereal Review

Kashi Honey Sunshine CerealIf you (or your kids) have a secret love for Cap'n Crunch cereal, then listen up! Kashi has produced a brilliant spin-off of this childhood favorite dubbed Kashi Honey Sunshine. The many companies continually putting a healthy twist on our fattening/ artificial favorites fill me with excitement for what the future holds in terms of food and lifestyles.

To start, the cereal pieces are the same size as Cap'n Crunch. So is the flavor but the Kashi cereal has less of an artificial, sugar loaded mouth feel (probably because Kashi uses half the sugar that Cap'n Crunch does). Each spoonful (or handful) leaves your taste buds delighted from the slightly sweet, crunchy and somewhat airy bite sized pieces, which deliver a pleasant hint of honey. Kashi describes their new invention best, as "Honey-kissed Seven Whole Grain Cereal Pillows."

Kashi Honey Sunshine Cereal has excellent nutrition facts. Each ¾ cup contains 100 calories (try making your own 100 calorie packs), 1.5 grams of total fat (2% of the RDA), no saturated fat, no cholesterol, 140 mg of sodium (6% of the RDA), 6 grams of fiber (22% of the RDA), a perfect 6 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. The only thing missing is added vitamins and minerals.

The ingredient list is similarly impressive, starting with whole grain yellow corn meal and ending with Luo Han fruit concentrate, mixing a few other wholesome ingredients in between.

I paid $3.79 for a box of Kashi Honey Sunshine, which was more expensive than all of the other Kashi cereal varieties. On the other hand, the cereal is brand new and I expect the price to go down a bit when the hype has died down. In the end, if you have ever tried Cap'n Crunch and "secretly" liked it, you will find that spending about $4 on a 12 ounce box of these crunchy "pillows" is absolutely worth it.
