Wholly Wholesome Organic Whole Wheat Pie Shells and a reduced fat, reduced sugar cheesecake Review
I was recently asked if I would review Wholly Wholesome pie shells - and of course, I was into helping spread the word about a certified organic product made from only natural ingredients. Being the generous person that I am, I decided that the only thing that would do it justice would be a cheesecake. The things I endure to bring you readers a review!
But not just any old cheesecake would do. If Wholly Wholesome was going to make the effort to bring us a whole wheat pie shell with no bleached enriched crap or artificial colors etc. then I could not pollute it with a high fat high sugar cheesecake - no way! Experiment time people! I decided to try for a reduced fat and sugar cheesecake.
You can see more about my experience with the cheesecake later today, but in summary texture was good, so was the taste, but it just wasn't sweet enough. But let me tell you about that crust /pie shell. The taste of the pie crust really added to the cheesecake experience. It was far better than graham cracker crusts! It sounds weird to say it because I have never really thought or even remembered tasting pie crust before. As I was looking around the net, it seems I'm not the only one that recently baked with Wholly Wholesome - check out that pumpkin pie over at Veggie Talk.

Wholly Wholesome 9 inch pie shells are usually in the natural grocer's freezer section, and they come with two in a pack. They are certified Kosher, dairy-free and vegan. The serving size is 1/8th of a crust, which is about 1 slice of pie. It adds 110 calories, 8 grams of fat (13% of the daily value) and 4 grams of saturated fat, which is 19% of the DV, 2 grams of protien and 9 grams total carbohydrates which includes 2 grams of fiber and less than 1 gram of sugars.
I didn't know pie crust adds so many calories, and Wholly Wholesome has a little more fat that I would like. They use palm fruit shortening and palm oil is one of those vegetable oils with a high percentage (greater than 40%) of saturated fats. Overall, I liked Wholly Wholesome Whole Wheat Pie Shell and I would use it again - in fact, I have the "Spelt" one and I might try that pumpkin pie recipe they made at Veggie Talk.
