Mrs. Freshley's, despite the deceiving name, is a big bad wolf for dieters out there. Just look at Mrs. Freshlys Jumbo HoneyBun which has 43% of the daily value for total fat (28 grams), and 62% of the daily value for saturated fat. However, unlike in Red Riding Hood, this Big Bad Wolf has a split personality. Along with the bad, Mrs. Freshley's decided that they would create SnackAway, "a line of better-for-you snack cakes developed to be part of an overall healthier lifestyle."
I spied Mrs. Freshley's SnackAway 100 Calorie Mini Fudge Brownie Bites and decided to see if Mrs. Freshley's was indeed becoming friendlier to those of us trying to find better choices in the supermarket aisles. I opened the box and was expecting to get bags of little brownie bites. Instead, I was greeted with a white tray with three 2-bite brownies. As I took a bite and began to slowly savor my first little medallion, my thoughts were: kind of thin, yet dense and taste extremely similar to those brownies that you can find on every snack cake isle that are usually topped with nuts or little candy coated chocolates (I kid you not). Each bite is very moist because of the supreme denseness and could tackle any chocolate craving.
Each 30 gram dessert provides 100 calories, 2 grams of total fat and 0.5 grams of saturated fat (both 3% of the daily value), no cholesterol, 70 mg of sodium (3% of the DV), 2 grams of protein and 20 grams of carbohydrates which includes 5 grams of fiber (20% of the RDA) and 10 grams of sugar. There is also 10-35% of the RDA for Iron and Vitamin A, D, C and E in each compact sweet treat. While not bad, the ingredients list is needs a chemistry textbook to be deciphered. It starts with water (?), sugar, enriched bleached flour, polydextrose, corn syrup, soybean oil ... and keeps going.
Each box with 18 Mrs. Freshley's SnackAway 100 Calorie Mini Fudge Brownie Bites cost $2.50. In my opinion, these are completely acceptable for an occasional treat that will satisfy, without blowing your nutritious ways. Do not eat these alone, because you will not satisfied. Have it with a hot cup of tea (we have quite a few recommendations), or wash it down with a big glass of water. Others may feel like Mrs. Freshley's Snack Away 100 Calorie Mini Fudge Brownie Bites are too processed and not worth it, but to each his own.
