I tend to gravitate towards meals that are quick and easy. Also, feeding only myself, I tend to look for single serving pre-packaged foods as well. Sorry, I just don't like leftovers. That is why on my last trip to the store, Kashi 7 Whole Grain Pilaf Sides caught my attention. Also the fact that it was on sale helped too at 3 for $6.99. Score!
Immediately the Fiery Fiesta flavor made it's way into my cart and as soon as I got home, it made its way onto my plate. Kashi says this "Fiery Fiesta" is "Inspired by the robust flavors found south of the border. We've combined our 7 whole grains with roasted corn, tomatoes, red bell peppers, black beans, cilantro and fiery poblano chilies." I say - oh Yum
! The taste was nothing short of stellar. Every ingredient in this dish really worked together to create a wonderful spicy rice dish. Each packet says it makes about 2 servings (1 cup cooked) but I ate the entire package and it kept me full for hours.
Each 1 cup serving of Kashi 7 Whole Grain Fiery Fiesta Pilaf Sides is 210 calories, 5 grams of fat (8% of the daily value), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (3% of the DV) and 40 grams of carbohydrates including 26% of the DV for fiber (7 grams of fiber) and 3 grams of sugars. There is also 8 grams of protein per serving. Kashi also made it a point to note that there is only 400mg of sodium (17% of the DV), compared to the average 734mg in other ready rice side brands.
This meal is a great combination of healthy fats, whole grain carbs and power packed protein. The ingredients list has only ingredients you would expect to use if you made this yourself (and you are a really good cook). Overall this is a pretty healthy dish. I attribute the 14 grams of fiber and 16 grams of protein for that (remember, I ate the entire package). This is another healthy winner from Kashi. I have to hand it to them. They really know how to make delicious, healthy products. I can't wait to try the other flavors-Original and Moroccan Curry.
