Quaker Oatmeal To Go Maple Brown Sugar High Fiber Square Review
Lately, I have been addicted to anything with oats. It is becoming a problem ... I can't get enough of my oatmeal! My biggest difficulty recently is oatmeal's lack of portability, so I looked around for some products that I could transport with me on a daily basis. Not being one for fuss, I didn't want to deal with Tupperware, spoons, prep work, etc. And my job doesn't have a microwave or a place to prepare/cook food, so instant oatmeal was out of the question.
That's when I came across Quaker Oatmeal To Go High Fiber Square. These oh so portable snack bars allow me to feed my addiction throughout the day. I tried the Maple Brown Sugar and found the texture to be just right for my liking - soft and chewy. It wasn't too dry which can be the case with other high fiber bars. The flavor was sweet, but not over bearing.

I tried the high fiber version because I know that the lack of fiber in the other kinds would leave me famished. Each 60 gram bar has 210 calories, 4 grams total fat, 4 grams of protein and 43 grams of carbohydrates which includes 10 grams of fiber and 13 grams of sugar)and. That is almost half of your daily requirements for fiber!
Still, even with the flavor being good, I am not too impressed. I think this bar is a little too high in calories and sugars for me. Also, I tend to be geared towards higher protein bars. They tend to curb my hunger better. With only 4 grams of protein, I wasn't satisfied.
Then I read the ingredients.(WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, INULIN (SOURCED FROM THE CHICORY ROOT), OAT BRAN CONCENTRATE, RICE FLOUR, SUGAR, OAT FLOUR, POLYDEXTROSE, MARGARINE (PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL**, SOYBEAN OIL, WATER, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL**, SALT, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, SOY LECITHIN, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA [A PRESERVATIVE], ANNATTO COLOR, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, VITAMIN A PALMITATE), MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, GLYCERIN, CORN SYRUP, DRIED WHOLE EGGS, MALTED BARLEY EXTRACT, CALCIUM CARBONATE, WATER, SALT, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, SORBITOL, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, CANE MOLASSES, CANE SYRUP, SODIUM BICARBONATE, MALT (CONTAINS BARLEY, SOY, AND WHEAT), CORN FLOUR, MALIC ACID, SODIUM ALGINATE, ENZYME MODIFIED SOY PROTEIN, NATURAL MIXED TOCOPHEROLS, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE, ARTIFICIAL COLOR, POTASSIUM SORBATE (A PRESERVATIVE), NIACINAMIDE*, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, REDUCED IRON, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE*, RIBOFLAVIN*, THIAMIN MONONITRATE*, BHT (PRESERVATIVE), FOLIC ACID*. ) EEK!!! It is a processed mess!
Needless to say I will not be buying these again. I can get my fiber, and my oats elsewhere. It is important to remember that just because a food has something healthy as the main ingredient (Oatmeal), that doesn't always guarantee a healthy end product! Quaker does have some better options though like the Quaker Simple Harvest Honey Roasted Nut Granola and Cinnamon Brown Sugar Granola Bar. Unfortunately these high fiber bars are a total loss.
