B&M No Sugar Added HomeStyle Baked Beans

B&M No Sugar Added HomeStyle Baked BeansGrowing up, nobody in my family ever made baked beans from scratch, and most of the time, I simply keep cans of it on hand when I want a quick side for hot-dogs or hamburgers. I usually just buy whatever brand is on sale, but recently my store started carrying B&M No Sugar Added HomeStyle Baked Beans. While more expensive than the large cans of other brands, I decided to try them anyway to see if this was as good as the original.

I emptied half of the can into a small pot and heated it on the stove. I noticed a distinct lack of pork floating around, and when I flipped the empty can over and examined the label, I didn't see any meat products listed - that should be a staple in any baked beans that's not specifically vegetarian. I spooned my heated beans onto some toast and dug into my cheap lunch. They're pretty much just like any other baked bean I've tried - sweet, a little spicy, with a moderately thick sauce. The beans are still fairly firm and not at all overcooked, something I definitely appreciate. I wouldn't be able to tell these apart from regular baked beans, which is good - but the flavor is not really anything different from the standard, a good thing in this case.

Each 1/2 cup serving of B&M No Sugar Added HomeStyle Baked Beans provides 120 calories, no fat, 17% of the daily value for sodium, 8 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugars and 7 grams of protein. The ingredients are, "Baked Small Pea Beans In Sauce Containing Water, Modified Corn Starch, Tomato Paste, Salt, Natural and Artificial Flavor*, Seasoning Blend (Dehydrated Onion and Garlic, Dextrose, Spices, Natural Flavor, Soybean Oil), Caramel Color (Sulfites), Liquid Smoke, Sucralose (Splenda Brand), Acesulfame Potassium."

If you're not opposed to artifical sweeteners, then switch to this product to save up to 14 grams of sugar, and 270 mg sodium off a serving of regular baked beans. While these beans were about twice the cost of the other brands, a single can only cost me $1.09 - a pretty cheap amount for a quick and convenient side dish.

Baked beans sans bacon is like a sandwich with no filling. What's the point? Agree most beans are too high in sugar, but you can never replicate that smoked bacon flavor with flavoring, whether it be natural or artificial.

Awesome, now they need a no salt added version and we're in business!! hehe

LOVE baked beans.
