Primal Strips (Thai Peanut)
Every time I'm in this one little grocery store near me and I see Primal Strips by the register, I get more and more tempted to buy them. What are Primal Strips, you ask? They're "meatless vegan jerky seitan which provides high energy and high protein" according to the website. I'm not a vegetarian (or a vegan, for that matter), but I do love branching out in the meat-free world from time to time, so I picked up a package of the Thai Peanut Primal Strips to try out.

The first thing I noticed about this product was that, well, it isn't really jerky. Meaning, it doesn't have that dry chewiness that regular beef/ turkey/ bison jerky has. I opened the outer package, and then struggled a bit to open the inner one (these snacks are double sealed for freshness, they say). I took a bite of the seitan jerky and chewed, pondering. I really liked the flavor - the Peanut and Thai spices blended together really well, and added zip to the meatless base. The texture was a little hard to get used to, though; still,
after a few bites, I was really loving this savory snack.
Each 1 ounce package of the Thai Peanut Primal Strips provides 74 calories, 3% and 5% of the daily value for total and saturated fat, 15% of the DV for sodium, 1 gram of fiber, 4 grams of sugar and 10 grams of protein.
The ingredients are non-GMO vital gluten (wheat protein), water, unrefined evaporated cane juice, naturally brewed soy sauce (water, non-GMO soybeans, sea salt), expeller pressed canola oil, peanut butter, vinegar, fresh Thai basil, sea salt, and natural vegetarian spices. There is no MSG added to these strips, either.
I bought the package (one serving) from Whole Foods for $1.39, and this seems to be a little better nutritionally than Stonewall's Spicy Chicken Style Jerquee, which is the only other vegetarian jerky I've tried. Taste-wise, Stonewall's had the edge though. My experience with vegetarian & vegan jerkys are limited so if you've tried any other brands we would love to know which is your favorite - which one should I try next?!

I've tried some of the other Primal Strips and really enjoyed them. I love Thai food and this flavor sounds delicious. I'l have to look for it at my local market.
why 3 stars if you enjoyed them so much?
Hi Rodzilla - Thanks for the question! I really enjoyed the taste after getting used to it, but since I love beef jerky so much, these just didn't live up to what I thought they would be. They do taste pretty good, though, once you know that.
Yeah I tried them once before myself. Pretty good for fake jerky, but I also prefer the real stuff.
