Popchips Cheddar

Popchips CheddarI've tried the Original Popchips and I liked them a lot. Given the range of flavors offered by the brand, though, I figured it was a shame not to try the other ones, so I opted for the Cheddar flavor. I picked up a one-serving bag for $1.29 at Duane Reade - pricey but really not too bad for healthier chips.

I scanned the ingredients list first and it was nowhere near as simple as the Popchips Original: Natural Potato Ingredients (Potato Flour, Potato Starch), Safflower Oil and/or Sunflower Oil, Seasoning (Whey Powder, Salt, Cheddar Cheese [Pasteurized Milk, Cheese Cultures, Enzymes], Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Natural Flavors, Lactic Acid, Buttermilk Powder, Cream, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Butter Powder, Disodium Phosphate, Turmeric Oleoresin, Annatto Extracts, Onion Powder, Sodium Citrate, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid), Rice Flour, Salt, Soy Lecithin (Processing Aid). I figured many of those probably went into the cheesy coating, so I decided to do my best to put the thought out of my mind and enjoy my chips.

I opened the bag and was greeted with a delightfully cheesy aroma. I dug in, and was not disappointed - Popchips are not fried, so they taste light and crispy at the same time. They're not too heavy, but they definitely satisfy a crunchy craving. The cheddar flavor was great, a bit artificial, but that's to be expected.

A one-ounce serving of Popchips Cheddar (21 chips in total) provides 120 calories, 4% of the daily value for total fat, 12% of the DV for sodium, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein. The 0.8-ounce bag I had contained 100 calories and a little less of everything else as well, but I wanted to get the details accounted for in the larger bags as well.

The bottom line: these are good. They're not greasy, and there's really no inappropriate guilt after eating them. They're not as high in fiber and protein as Glenny's Sea Salt Soy Crisps, but they sure are easier to find (I get them at the drugstore). I will definitely be going back to these to fulfill a salty craving.
