Helen's Kitchen Thai Yellow Curry

Helen's Kitchen Thai Yellow CurryWhen I saw Helen's Kitchen's entrees in the freezer section of my local natural foods market, I was instantly intrigued. The packaging had a very simple but fun design that matched their claim of "simple health." Plus the box also said that it was certified organic, GMO, and trans fat free, with 13 grams of protein, so I picked up a packaged of Helen's Kitchen Thai Yellow Curry. This dish is described as, "Thai yellow curry with tofu steaks & vegetables over basmati rice."

I really liked that the dish holding the food is cardboard, however, there is a plastic over-wrap that you're supposed to leave on for cooking (I'm assuming it helps it steam), which defeats the whole "don't microwave your food in plastic" thing. I popped it in for 4 minutes, and found that the sauce was bubbling nicely. I let it sit in the plastic to steam for a bit, then let it sit another minute to cool off, before finally digging in.

The tofu was nice and firm, but still had picked up a lot of the flavor of the coconutty curry sauce. The veggies, unfortunately, weren't too crisp, but I find it's nearly impossible to get crisp veggies in a microwaved frozen meal, and these were pretty close. As for the sauce, it was delicious - slightly sweet but still tangy, and a beautiful yellow color accented nicely by the spicy red peppers and onions.

Each Helen's Kitchen Thai Yellow Curry entree provides 360 calories, 15% of the daily value for total fat, which includes 5 grams of saturated fat (25% DV), 16% DV for sodium, 13 grams of protein, 4 grams are fiber and 11 grams are sugar. The ingredients list is surprisingly easy to read.

I paid only $3.49 for this on sale - a very good price in New York City. I thought it was really delicious, was excellent nutritionally, and I like that it seems to be a small mom-and-son company that's very conscious of their environmental footprint and where their food is sourced. I'm definitely going to stock up on these, and branch out to the other flavors as well.
