Erewhon Aztec Crunchy Corn & Amaranth Cereal

Erewhon Aztec Crunchy Corn & Amaranth CerealI'm always up for trying new cereals, and I wind up buying a few different kinds at once just to test a few out. Sometimes I go for whole-grain, other times I'm more interested in slightly sweetened snacks, and occasionally only hot cereals will do the trick. When I found Erewhon Aztec Crunchy Corn & Amaranth cereal on sale at the grocery store for $3.99, I picked it up right away. The name sounded so exotic - Aztec? Amaranth cereal? I was also drawn to the fact that it was organic and gluten free, with little sugar. Sounded healthy, but would it taste good?

Erewhon cereal is advertised as having a unique shape that "ensures that Aztec stays crisp in milk." Yes, it certainly does that. In fact, when I poured myself a bowl sans milk to munch on, I was amazed at the crunchiness of this cereal (and not in a particularly good way, either). The corn and amaranth nuggets are so crunchy that I found myself getting a headache after chewing them for a little while! Milk tempered this a little bit, but I still found the texture jarringly crisp.

As for the taste, I have to admit that it was pretty bland. I could pick up on a tiny bit of the corn flavor, but honestly it was pretty tasteless overall. In fact, as I simultaneously munched and pondered, I thought that perhaps the crunchiness was the most interesting thing this cereal had going for it.

One good thing about Erewhon Aztec Crunchy Corn & Amaranth Cereal is that each 1 cup serving only provides 110 calories. There is also only 1 gram of sugars, but not much fiber - 1 gram - and 2 grams of protein. The ingredients are simply, Organic Corn Flour, Organic Ground Whole Amaranth, Organic Apple Juice Concentrate, Sea Salt.

This cereal is good to perhaps mix in with some other more caloric cereals to provide bulk. Other than that, despite the low calorie count, I can see no other reason to buy this. My advice? Look elsewhere for a simple, low-sugar cereal; this isn't worth it.
