Clif Builder's Chocolate Bar

Clif Builders Chocolate BarClif Builder's Bars have no trans fats or hydrogenated oils, are all natural and 33% organic plus there is 20 grams of protein (from soy & nuts) in each bar. I was looking for a high-protein snack before a big workout, so I decided to give Clif Builder's Chocolate Bar a shot.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (68 grams)
Calories: 270
Total Fat: 8 grams, 12%
Saturated Fat: 5 grams, 25%
Sodium: 230 mg, 9%
Carbohydrates: 30 grams
Fiber: 4 grams, 16%
Sugars: 20 grams
Protein: 20 grams

I unwrapped the bar and studied it - the bottom layer was crispy, whereas the top layer was softer, and the entire bar was covered in a vanilla coating. When I took a nibble, I found that the crispy and chewy layers combined perfectly for a satisfying bite. The flavor pleasantly incorporated vanilla and almond without being to artificial-tasting. The two layers definitely made the bar more satisfying - I was powered not only through my workout but for a couple hours after-wards as well.

I flipped the bar over to examine the nutritionals. each 68 gram bar provides 270 calories from 8 grams of fat, 5 grams of which is saturated - that's 12% and 25% of the daily value. There is also 12% of the DV for fiber, 20 grams of sugar and 20 grams of protein (as well as a slew of vitamins and minerals). The calorie count is quite hefty for a snack - but this bar is bigger than most at 68 grams and just the protein content alone provides 80 calories. The ingredients list, while all-natural is quite lengthy. Clif says their Builder's Bars are low glycemic (although there is a lot of sugar in my opinion).

I've tried many of the bars reviewed on this site, like Balance Gold, Doctor's CarbRite and PowerBars, just to name a few - and this was definitely one of my favorites in taste. It combined the chewiness of the bars like Doctor's and Power Bar with the crispness of Kashi Crunchy Bars. At $2.59 (New York prices!) these are more expensive than some of the other options. However, the nutrition facts leaves a lot to be desired. There is too much saturated fat and sugar. This is probably for those days when I am running long distances or if I consumed the bar over the period of an entire day - eating a little here and there - eating only 1 for the day as my snacks.
