Cheerios: Banana Nut Cheerios

Cheerios: Banana Nut CheeriosMy mom and I were making our weekly grocery shopping trip and we decided to try some new cereals to take with us as snacks (we like to bring little baggies of cereal along as a midday pick-me-up). There wasn't a big collection of healthy brands and, after much deliberation, we decided upon Banana Nut Cheerios and Cinnamon Chex (read the review).

Upon popping open the translucent bag of Banana Nut Cheerios and reaching in for that much anticipated first bite, I thought "banana bread". I didn't think "artificial" or "banana extract". When eaten dry, the flavor is 100% comparable to a loaf of fresh baked banana bread and the texture is typical of Cheerios thin, crunchy circles.

NUTRITION FACTS

I couldn't wait any longer and poured myself a small after-dinner bowl, milk included. The milk does not detract from the amazing flavor, but merely enhances it. As you near the end of each bite, the experience is reminiscent of taking a bite of banana bread and taking a sip of milk at the same time so as to moisten the dense banana treat and wash it down in a refreshing way. This cereal aficionado is quite impressed with the tastiness that Banana Nut Cheerios provides.

Each 3/4 cup serving of Banana Nut Cheerios provides 100 calories, 1 gram of total fat (2% of the daily value), 1 gram of fiber, 9 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein. The ingredients list starts with whole grain corn, sugar, whole grain oats, brown sugar syrup, corn syrup ... dried corn syrup, banana puree etc. That's quite a few different types of sugar!

The taste is great, but the ingredients list could use a little trimming of the sugar, and as you can tell, there is not much fiber or protein. I paid $2.12 for a 10.9 ounce box of Banana Nut Cheerios and, while it will not replace my staples (Multigrain Cheerios and Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal), I will most definitely buy it again as a sweet enrichment to my whole grain favorites (it packs a lot of flavor) or as a special treat from time to time.

Here's my tip o the day: mix the banana nut cheerios with the new chocolate cheerios, maybe some freeze dried banana chips, and some dark chocolate covered nuts (or just mini chocolate chips) and you have yourself a prettty bomb homemade trail mix!

I've been snacking on this cereal, just dry. It is soooo good. I know there is a new chocolate one out now too...Can't wait to try tat one!

I have seen the chocolate one online, but can't get my hands on it just yet! I can't wait to try it out though!

agree on banana + Chocolate. They have a similar ingredient profile (corn first as opposed to oats) which gives them a slightly different consistency

They don't taste like actual banana... It's a plasticy, corn-syrupy fake banana taste...

Although bananas are my #1 cheerios accoutrement, these freak me out a little. I am going to be sticking with my plain old cheerios.

these look so good- just the corn syrup & sugar that keeps me away!

Never too late to "update" an old favorite.I have to agree that banana doesn't taste exactly like fresh banana.
