Healthy Choice Homestyle Salisbury Steak

Healthy Choice Homestyle Salisbury SteakEvery now and again, I get a craving for some hometown diner food, and since hiking down to the local mom-and-pop's joint will result in my being pushed out with a handtruck due to ingesting copious amounts of food, I decided to try Healthy Choice Homestyle Salisbury Steak instead. Promising, "Savory Salisbury steak in thick, rich gravy with seasoned red-skin potatoes, delicious vegetables, and a caramel apple crisp is a low-fat way to enjoy a satisfying meal" - how could I resist.

The directions are simple and easy to follow: pull back film that covers the dessert, slit the film over the entrée, and microwave 6-7 minutes. I did exactly that, and was greeted by a surprisingly inviting meal - it really looks exactly like the box shows! I dug into the steak itself first. The meat patty is quite large - about 3 x 1 inches, which is far more meat than I expect in most frozen dinners. And the taste? Delicious love this! The beef is lightly seasoned, being just salty enough to be flavorful. It's moist, with a velvety-yet-not-mushy texture. While the package promises a "rich mushroom gravy", the sauce itself was quite runny, and I only saw one forlorn mushroom slice - still, the flavor was very present. The potatoes are just okay - they're cooked well, but lack any special flavor. I added some Mrs. Dash to them, but without that they're pretty bland. The mixed vegetables are the same story. They still have a slight crispness, which I really like in my vegetables, but needed some seasonings and (I almost hate to say it) salt.

I finished my vegetables and spooned into the dessert compartment. While there was very little topping, and the oats were soggy, not crispy, the peach filling was great. Sweet, not saccharin, with caramel and cinnamon undertones. The peaches still had texture, but were soft enough to spoon through - I was really impressed by how good the dessert was.

Each Healthy Choice Homestyle Salisbury Steak meal provides 360 calories, 9 grams of total fat, 3.5 grams of which is saturated - making each about 10% of the daily value. There is also 22% of the DV for sodium, 16 grams of protein, 32% of the DV for fiber but also 15 grams of sugar.

While the saturated fat and sugar are a bit high, the overall calorie count is pretty low, and I found this meal very filling on it's own. One box cost me $2.00 on sale, but run about $3.50 normally. This is a tasty meal by itself, and will satisfy my diner cravings for nights to come.
