Dove Beautiful Milk Chocolate

Dove Beautiful Milk ChocolateI like to eat chocolate for its taste, not for any added nutritional value, so when I saw the skin-nourishing vitamin and cocoa flavanol claims on Dove Beautiful Milk Chocolate in the store, I very dubious. The curved box-like packaging was more reminiscent of a beauty product, which is what Dove is known for - that made me question this even more, but I was totally intrigued. There is a lot of text on the front of the box describing all its virtues, but the tiniest print tells the consumer to look at the nutrition facts for info on fat content - that is a clue as to what's in store.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 5 pieces (40 grams)
Calories: 220
Total Fat: 13 grams, 20%
Saturated Fat: 8 grams, 40%
Sodium: 25 mg, 1%
Protein: 2 grams
Carbohydrates: 23 grams
Fiber: 1 grams, 4%
Sugar: 22 grams
Price: $3.99 (5.3oz box)
I love the sweet and creamy taste of the chocolate. It was delicious and didn't taste as though it was nutritionally enhanced. It's small enough to be bite-sized but large enough to be savored.

A serving of 5 pieces of chocolate provides 220 calories and a whopping 40% of the daily value for saturated fat, along with 22 grams of sugars. The chocolate provides 10% of the daily value for vitamin C, calcium, vitamin E, niacin, biotin, and zinc - do you think that makes up for all that saturated fat? I think not!

A 5.36 ounce box with about 4 servings typically costs $3.99 at Kroger, which is more expensive than regular chocolates. Really, the added nutrition promises is nothing more than a marketing gimmick, and hopefully not a successful one. I would rather have real chocolate that makes no promises other than a fantastic taste and maybe antioxidants (like Xocai X Power Squares); or even sugar free chocolate because diabetics need love too.

Very interesting...I've always been intrigued by these but afraid to buy into them. I have a tendency to go overboard on chocolate in the first place!

Not sure if the comments are turned off on Tanya's posts, but I wasn't able to leave one thanking for the Green Giant veggie coupons!! Love them!
