Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream

Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice CreamI love ice cream of any flavor - the sweet, creamy texture is delicious no matter what the season. Some people prefer full fat ice cream, but I much prefer the low-fat or light kind so that I can enjoy more without the excess of fat. While I was out trying to decide what flavor ice cream to get, I decided to try the Kroger private label brand. I decided to get a tub of Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream because it sounded like a fun and delicious option.

What I expected when I opened the container was a pinkish hue with chocolate chunks in it, but what I saw was a mauve/ magenta color. While this was slightly weird, it wasn't enough to deter me from trying this ice cream. It turned out to have a fruity taste, with a creamy mouth-feel. The chocolate chunks are quite large but softer than your regular piece of frozen chocolate so that they're easily chewable. The raspberry and chocolate combination is quite nice and fit together like old friends that know each other well, but each flavor is quite distinct with it's own personality. Still, while this flavor was ... okay, there really was no wow factor.

Each 1/2 cup serving of Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream provides 140 calories from 4.5 grams of total fat (7% of the daily value), 2.5 grams of which are saturated (13% of the DV), 45 milligrams of sodium (2% DV) and 21 grams of carbohydrates which includes 17 grams of sugars. There is also 3 grams of protein, 6% of the recommended amount for vitamin A and 10% DV calcium.

I paid $3.34 for a 1.75 quart container at Kroger, which was reasonable. Like I said before, though it was okay, I think there are better "light" ice cream (or dairy free alternatives) with similar or better nutrition stats. Try Arctic Zero Chocolate Peanut Butter or Ben & Jerry's Light Strawberries & Cream Ice Cream.
