Glenny's Caramel Soy Crisps

Glennys Apple Cinnamon and Caramel Soy CrispsI picked up Glenny's Caramel Soy Crisps at my local supermarket for $0.79 each. I must admit they first appealed to me because I thought they were cute, as the crisps were shaped like hearts. Score 1 already for Glenny's without me even opening the package!

I tasted the caramel with a little bit of trepidation, anticipating the worst. I figured they would have a slightly glossy coating, a la caramel popcorn, and be way too sweet for my taste buds. Instead, I was met with a thin, bumpy, chip-like crisp, with a pleasant hint of caramel that filled my mouth. The flavor was more neutral than sweet - and trust me, that's a good thing. Too much caramel has a cloying effect. The crisps had a light powdery dusting, and yes, they were heart-shaped ... albeit a bit disfigured, but all is forgiven because they were so yummy yummy.

A serving of Glenny's Caramel Soy Crisps (18 grams - there are 2 servings per bag) provides 70 calories per serving from 2 grams of total fat, no saturated fat, 125 mg of sodium, 5 grams of protein and 9 grams of carbohydrates which includes 1 gram of fiber (4% of the DV) and 2 grams of sugars. The ingredients are Low fat non-GMO soy flour, rice, mid oleic sunflower oil, sugar, natural flavor, sea salt.

Glenny's seems to advertise a lower calorie count than other soy crisps, when really the serving size is what differs, 18 grams for Glenny's compared to 28 grams for most other brands. On top of that, the advertised "9 grams of soy protein" is for the entire bag. Why provide nutrition facts for an 18 gram serving but then brag about the amount of protein in 2x the serving size?! Shame on you Glenny's.

Though those first bags I purchased were 79 cents, I have not found them as cheapy again. Usually, they retail for about $0.99 - $1.79. Glenny's is available in MANY flavors, from the salty (Glenny's Lightly Salted Soy Crisps) to the sweet (Glenny's Organic 100 Calorie Brownies), but the Caramel Soy Crisps is one of my favorites from this brand.
