Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew Bar

Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew BarI went to the drug store looking for something to satisfy a sweet craving, and I stumbled upon Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew Bar. I didn't want to get a real candy bar, so I figured this would be a good compromise. I plunked down my $1.99 (a bit on the steep side) and prepared to enjoy ... caramel, peanuts and nougat, all dipped in a rich chocolaty coating ... didn't sound like a "nutrition bar" to me, but I was ready for the experience.

I unwrapped the bar and saw what appeared to be a candy bar. Moreover, when I took a bite, it tasted like a candy bar too! The chocolate coating was delicious, and the peanuts were a great touch. The nougat center was chewy and statisfying, and the caramel coating was perfect. What a great combo of sweet and salty, chewy and crunchy.

Naturally, the nutrition stats on the Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew Bar aren't stellar. Each 34 gram bar provides 130 calories, 8 grams of total fat, 4 grams of saturated fat (13% and 20% of the daily value), 70 mg of sodium (3% of the DV), 5 grams of protein and 17 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 6 grams of dietary fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 9 grams of sugar alcohol.

Atkins bars seem to always have a lot of saturated fat, but the fiber and protein counts are pretty impressive. The only difference between this bar and a candy bar is that this has less sugar, so while this is good as a replacement, again, like the Atkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar, this is probably not going to be a regular treat.

I think that the nutritional facts are pretty good, actually, considering that a normal candy bar would have more than just additional sugar. The calories of a snicker's bar (the same size and roughly same flavors), would be approximately twice the calories! While the Atkins bar is a tad high in saturated fat, the overall fat content can helpo keep you fuller. Also, the protein feature is great!

I tend to prefer bars with higher fat and protein content, as long as the calories aren't too high. I would probably choose this in opposition to a larabar or something, due to the lower calories and higher protein :)
