Special K Red Berries Waffles

Special K Red Berries Waffles

Remember when Special K only had Cereal in their product line? Well, no more - there are Bars, Protein Shakes, Water, Snacks, Crackers and now Waffles. I love waffles, so I decided to give the Special K Red Berries Waffles a try. I was excited to try a new brand of waffle and intrigued by the "red berries" addition.

The waffles had a taste and texture similar to other frozen waffles, but I think they may have less of an oily surface, which was great. The little dots of red complemented the traditional waffle taste with a nice touch of berry flavor. I was a bit skeptical initially about how much of the berry flavor came from real berries since the box mentions both natural and artificial flavoring. But in the middle of all those ingredients is a mention of dried strawberries, so that's encouraging.

A serving size of Special K Red Berries Waffles is 2 waffles which provides 160 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat, 0.5 gram of which is saturated (4% and 3% of the daily value), 430 milligrams of sodium (18% of the daily value), 4 grams of protein and 31 grams of carbohydrates, of which less than 1 gram is dietary fiber and 4 grams are sugars. The waffles are a source of vitamin A, calcium, iron, B vitamins, and folic acid, ranging from 10-30% DV in a serving. The ingredients start with enriched wheat flour, water, eggs and sugar (more at their website).

One box of 10 waffles were $2.50 at Kroger while they were on sale. The red berries added a nice touch to plain waffles and the calories are not bad for waffles, but Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Oat Waffles and Natures Path Organic Optimum Power Waffles have about the same amount of calories and fat with more fiber.

i WANT to like special k. i like the cereal original with the strawberries, but i dont eat it because theres no fiber/satiety! i wish they would use whole grains and cut some of the sugar. then we'll talk! :)

It sounds okay to try, but Lisa makes a good point too. But I know the kids would eat it!
