LightLife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein Slices

Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein SlicesFeeling adventurous, I decided to pick up Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein Slices at the grocery store today, in an effort to further expand my meatless horizons. Having tried the Lightlife Smart Deli Pepperoniand liking it, I was optimistic about this too. It didn't hurt that a 5.5-ounce package (2.5 servings) was $2.69 - cheaper than some packages of real deli meats.

I brought home my "bologna" and opened the package. Like real bologna, the meatless kind had a sort of tan-pink color. Amazingly enough, it tasted a whole lot like bologna, too. Each slice was thick and satisfying, and not at all artificial-tasting. How do they do it? If all veggie meats tasted as good as this, I'd be a vegetarian in a heartbeat! I ate the slices by themselves to really get a sense of the flavor, but these would be great on sandwiches as well.

Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein Slices provides 70 calories per 4 slice serving, along with no fat, 490 grams of sodium (20% of the daily value), 14 grams of protein and 4 grams of carbohydrates which includes < 1 gram of fiber and 1 gram of sugar. There is also 25% of the RDA for calcium and 10% for iron. Compare that to real bologna, which has more calories, more fat, and less protein. The ingredients include soy protein isolate and wheat gluten (more details on their website).

The sodium count is a bit high, but it's deli "meat," after all, and as long as you're aware of the sodium in the rest of your foods, you should be fine. The entire package is a little less than 200 calories and a full 35 grams of protein. I'm a convert to this and will be buying it again Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style Veggie Protein Slices.

I've actually tried the "Smart Deli" slices (not bologna), and I don't care for them. Have you tried the Tofurky brands? THOSE are the best meatless deli slices ever. Unfortunately, eating too much of those kind of products wreaks havoc on my digestive system. :( I have to mainly eat real meat. I'm not vegetarian, but I'd like to eat less of it.

This is my favorite veg deli meat! I don't buy it often anymore, but I love to get it occasionally to reminisce on my school day lunches:)

I've always wondered how these tasted. I like the hot dogs, so now I'll try these!
