Yves Meatless Deli Salami Slices

Yves Meatless Deli Salami SlicesI have a long relationship with real salami; I remember eating it on delicious baguettes when I was in Paris, a happy memory both in terms of the food and the company on that trip. However, but I've been looking for a suitable alternative with less fat and fewer calories than regular salami. Yves brand has a slew of meatless options, and although I'm not vegetarian, I thought Yves Meatless Deli Salami Slices would be worth trying.

At first glance, you can tell that this is very different in appearance from 'regular' salami. It's pinker, with a less marbled red-and-white appearance. The taste is also different - it doesn't have that sharp bite that real meat has, yet it was enjoyable. I had it plain so I can only imagine how much more delicious it would be when incorporated into a sandwich.

Each 4-slice serving of Yves Meatless Deli Salami Slices (62 grams) offers 80 calories, no fat, 480 mg of sodium (20% of the daily value), 4 grams of carbohydrates and 15 grams of protein, as well as 20% of the RDA of iron, vitamin B12, and zinc, as well as 15% of the RDA for vitamin B6. This is much less in calories, fat and sodium than regular meat salami, although the sodium content in Yves is still on the high side. The ingredients start with water, vital wheat gluten, isolated soy protein, tofu but continues with ingredients that have un-pronounceable and un-recognizable names.

At $2.69 for a package with 2.5 servings, the price is pretty good. I would turn to this occasionally, and for vegetarians, it's certainly a suitable option, but for meat eaters, when you're feeling for salami, this might not cut it.
